FAA Psychiatry Services
Sunrise Psychiatry provides FAA-required psychiatric evaluations for pilots who have received correspondence from the Federal Aviation Administration requesting a mental health evaluation. These services are performed in person and are designed to meet FAA documentation requirements for initial and follow-up psychiatric evaluations.
This service is primarily utilized by commercial pilots and is available to pilots based in Arizona or those able to travel for an in-person evaluation.
FAA- Required Psychiatric Evaluations for Pilots
The FAA may request a psychiatric evaluation as part of the medical certification process when reviewing a pilot’s mental health history, medication use, or prior diagnoses. These evaluations are used by the FAA to assess clinical history, current functioning, and overall stability as it relates to aviation safety.
Sunrise Psychiatry performs FAA-required psychiatric evaluations in accordance with FAA expectations and documentation standards.
Conditions Commonly Reviewed by the FAA
FAA psychiatric evaluations may involve review of one or more of the following:
Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Anxiety disorders
Depressive disorders
SSRI use (past or current)
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
Adjustment disorders
Substance use history
Each evaluation is individualized and based on the specific request outlined in the FAA’s correspondence.
Our Role in the FAA Evaluation Process
Dr. DePriest serves as a psychiatrist performing FAA-required psychiatric evaluations. This includes:

FAA Psychiatric Evaluation Process
The typical process includes:
The FAA issues a letter requesting a psychiatric evaluation
The pilot schedules an in-person appointment with Sunrise Psychiatry
A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is completed
Required documentation is prepared in accordance with FAA guidelines
Guidance is provided regarding next steps and submission
Appointments are scheduled after the FAA letter has been received.
